About the DUFUTH Director of Administration role

The Director of Administration reports to the Chief Medical Director and takes charge of the general administration of the teaching hospital.

The person in this post:

  • Acts as chief adviser to the Chief Medical Director on general administrative matters
  • Serves as Secretary to the Board of Management
  • Leads the departments that handle administrative work across the hospital
  • Helps with policy work as directed by the Chief Medical Director and the Board of Management
  • Coordinates support departments so that services run smoothly for clinical and non-clinical units
  • Manages official letters for the Board and keeps hospital records safe and well arranged
  • Carries out any other related duties that the Board or the Chief Medical Director may assign from time to time

Qualifications and experience required

Applicants for the post of Director of Administration must meet the following conditions:

  • Hold a first degree in Hospital or Health Services Management, Humanities, or Social Sciences from a recognised university
  • Have at least twenty (20) years of post-qualification cognate experience in the administrative cadre within a government establishment
  • Hold the post of Deputy Director within a government establishment for not less than two (2) years
  • Possession of a Master’s degree or any other relevant higher degree in a related field is an added advantage
  • Be ICT compliant and able to work well with modern office systems
  • Be an Associate member of the Institute of Health Administrators of Nigeria (IHSAN)

Main duties of the Director of Administration

The Director of Administration has a wide role inside the teaching hospital. Key duties include:

  • Overseeing daily general administration across the hospital
  • Giving clear advice to the Chief Medical Director on staff matters and other administrative issues
  • Serving as Secretary to the Board of Management and keeping minutes and records
  • Supervising departments that handle personnel, general administration, and related support services
  • Helping with the drafting, carrying out, and review of policies as directed by the Chief Medical Director and/or the Board of Management
  • Ensuring that correspondence from and to the Board is well managed and that hospital records are kept up to date
  • Taking on any other tasks that the Board of Management or the Chief Medical Director may add to the role from time to time

Tenure of office

The Director of Administration holds office from the date of appointment. Time already spent in other organisations within the public service is part of the total service record.

The officer remains in post as long as:

  • The mandatory retirement age of sixty (60) years has not been reached, and
  • Total service years do not exceed thirty-five (35) years, whichever comes first

Salary and conditions of service

Salary and conditions of service follow the approved Public Service Salary Structure for this category of officer. This keeps the post in line with other senior posts within the public service system.
