Kogi State Polytechnic: False Allegations Dismissed (2026)

Aug, 01Views: 50

The Management of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has addressed recent publications in the media, which claim a resurgence of cult activities, 'sex-for-marks,' extortion, administrative laxity, and a collapse of discipline within the institution.

These reports are described as malicious, sensational, and intentionally misleading, aiming to tarnish the institution's image and undermine the reforms implemented under the leadership of Rector, Professor Salihu Sanusi Avidime. The claims lack credible evidence, relying on unsubstantiated allegations and conjectures that fall short of ethical journalism standards.

The Management is particularly concerned that these false claims were amplified through a prominent media platform, which failed to verify the allegations before publication. Reputable media organizations should subject such claims to rigorous verification and balance before publishing, rather than allowing their platforms to be used to disseminate unverified and politically motivated accusations.

An examination of the published allegations reveals inconsistencies, a lack of verifiable evidence, and a deliberate attempt to create a narrative without factual support.

ANALYSIS OF THE FALSE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST KOGI STATE POLYTECHNIC

First, the claim of a resurgence of cult activities is contradicted by the institution's academic calendar. The Polytechnic successfully held its second-semester examinations in a peaceful and orderly manner, with no reported cult-related disruptions or security breaches.

To state categorically, at no point during the examination period did Management receive any verified report of cult attacks or activities capable of threatening the academic exercise.

More significantly, students have been on semester break since June 16, 2026. This fact contradicts the claim that students are presently living in fear of cult activities on campus, as the two campuses have been largely vacated by students for several weeks.

Equally worrisome is the attempt to present grave allegations of 'sex-for-marks' and extortion claims without availing any identifiable complainant or evidence. Allegations of this magnitude are serious and deserve objective investigation; however, they cannot be elevated to established facts merely because unnamed sources claim they occurred.

The foundation of ethical journalism is authentication. Where allegations are made, they should be supported by credible evidence and subjected to fair scrutiny before publication. Anonymous claims, standing alone, cannot substitute for proof.

It is equally worthy to note that the reports acknowledge that the current Management had on Thursday, July 23rd, suspended six lecturers over allegations of unauthorized sales of books, handouts, and extortion, adding to a previous suspension of another lecturer alleged of sexual harassment.

Rather than demonstrating administrative weakness, these immediate actions clearly point to the fact that the Polytechnic's disciplinary mechanisms are active, responsive, and uncompromising. Institutions that conceal wrongdoing do not suspend staff or subject allegations to formal disciplinary processes. The actions already taken by Management demonstrate a clear commitment to accountability whenever verifiable complaints arise.

The management of Kogi State Polytechnic has dismissed certain publications as malicious, unverified, and politically motivated.

The claim that the Rector's absence has led to misconduct is speculative and lacks truth. It is essential to understand that the Rector's office extends beyond the campus, and those who think otherwise may be unfit to represent the noble profession.

As the Chief Executive of the institution, Professor Salihu Sanusi Avidime undertakes official assignments on behalf of the Polytechnic. These include engagements with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the National Board for Technical Education, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, and other statutory bodies.

Such official engagements are crucial to the discharge of his responsibilities and cannot be taken as administrative neglect.

The cumulative effect of these publications is to invite the public to convict the institution without evidence. This approach offends the principle that allegations must be substantiated before conclusions are drawn.

Kogi State Polytechnic remains open to genuine complaints supported by facts and has encouraged the use of established reporting channels. Where credible evidence exists, Management has demonstrated its readiness to investigate and apply sanctions.

The Polytechnic maintains that the publications are speculative, sensational, and calculated to create public distrust without meeting the minimum evidentiary threshold.

  • The institution is committed to fair reporting and public confidence based on verified facts.
  • The management will continue to investigate and address genuine complaints.
  • The Polytechnic will maintain its commitment to transparency and accountability.

The statement was signed by:

  • John Amos Onimisi,

Ag. Co-ordinator,

Directorate of Public Relations and Protocols,

Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja. 27th July, 2026.
