FG Issues Fresh Clarification On Subject Selection As WAEC Registration Continues

Dec, 09Views: 353

The Federal Government has released a definitive update on subject selection under the Senior Secondary School Curriculum amid widespread confusion during the ongoing WAEC registration across the country.

The announcement responds to rising questions from students, parents, school administrators, and counsellors who have been unsettled by conflicting information circulating online. The Ministry of Education says the rules remain clear — and students should follow proper guidance when choosing their subjects.

What the Ministry of Education Said

The clarification came from the Office of the Director of Press and Public Relations and reflects the positions of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sa’id Swaiba Ahmad.

According to the statement:

  • There is no restriction on any approved subject under the national curriculum.

  • Students are free to select subjects across all fields — science, arts, or social sciences — as long as the choices are properly guided by schools, parents, or trained counsellors.

  • A science student may pick an art or social science subject if it aligns with their goals, and vice-versa.

  • The curriculum is intentionally flexible to support student interest, ability, and long-term academic or career pathways.

Digital Technology: Only the Name Has Changed

The Ministry also addressed the confusion surrounding the subject formerly known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

  • ICT has simply been renamed to Digital Technology.

  • The content and competencies remain unchanged.

  • Any student who previously offered ICT can confidently select Digital Technology in future examinations, including the WAEC SSCE.

Trade Subjects: What Students Must Know

The government reaffirmed that six trade subjects are approved under the curriculum.

  • Students may register one trade subject, but only if their school offers it and they have received instruction in the subject.

  • If a school does not teach any of the six approved trade subjects, students are not required to register a trade subject as their third option.

Schools Urged to Guide Students Properly

WAEC registration is ongoing nationwide, and the Ministry has urged schools to provide accurate counselling so that students choose subjects that reflect their abilities, interests, and future academic plans.
