As the Bayero University, Kano (BUK) community gears up for the new academic session, the Students' Union Government (SUG) Caretaker Committee has released a crucial memo, urging students to prioritize peace, tolerance, and unity during the upcoming union elections.
The memo, titled 'SUG-BUK WELCOME RESUMPTION & ELECTION AWARENESS,' was signed by the Social Director of the Caretaker Committee, Dist. Sen. Shitu Bello Shehu. It sets the tone for a peaceful electoral period, emphasizing that 'election is not war.' The union leadership acknowledges that differing interests, opinions, and candidate preferences are natural in a democratic process like the students' union elections.
In the memo, the SUG Caretaker Committee outlined a clear charter of conduct for the student body, encouraging all students to vote peacefully and responsibly, respect one another's choices, avoid insults, fights, threats, or anger, and promote dialogue over violence. The committee stressed that no position is worth damaging friendships, unity, or the peace of the campus, reminding students that 'at the end of the day, we are all students of Bayero University, Kano.'
The leadership called on students to demonstrate 'maturity, tolerance, and respect before, during, and after the election,' encapsulating the vision in the slogan: 'Peaceful election, united students, better BUK.' The memo, which bears the signatures of the Committee Chairman, Sen. Ibrahim M. Giwa, and Secretary General, Sen. Bigira Simon Terkaa, is part of early efforts by the interim student administration to foster a convivial atmosphere and prevent electoral violence.
All correspondence related to the matter has been directed to the Office of the Public Relations Officer (P.R.O), as the university community looks forward to a peaceful and successful election. With this memo, the BUK Students' Union has made it clear that it is committed to upholding the values of democracy, peace, and unity, and it is now up to the students to make this vision a reality.
