What WAEC GCE Results Mean For 2025 Candidates

Feb, 17Views: 329

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of results for the 2025 Second Series of the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates. According to WAEC, the overall performance of candidates dropped by 11.47 percentage points compared to the previous year, 2024.

In a statement released by Moyosola Adesina, WAEC's Head of Public Affairs, it was revealed that 42.17% of candidates obtained credit passes in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This figure is lower than the 53.64% recorded in 2024, but slightly better than the 44.29% achieved in 2023.

Out of the 65,752 candidates who took the examination, 27,727 secured five credits, including English and Mathematics. WAEC noted that results of private candidates should not be directly compared to those of school candidates, as private candidates are outside the formal school system.

The analysis also showed that 33,989 candidates (51.69%) obtained at least five credit passes, with or without English Language and Mathematics. A total of 69,604 candidates registered for the examination, representing a 1.8% increase compared to 2024. Of this number, 65,752 candidates sat the exam in 370 centers nationwide.

WAEC disclosed that 61,943 candidates (94.21%) have had their results fully processed and released. However, 3,809 candidates (5.79%) still have some subjects being processed due to errors linked to them. The council said efforts are ongoing to complete the processing.

Additionally, 1,899 candidates (2.89%) have had their results withheld over alleged examination malpractice. WAEC stated that investigations are ongoing and that affected candidates will be informed once decisions are made.

In terms of gender distribution, 32,005 candidates (48.68%) were male, while 33,747 (51.32%) were female. Among those who obtained five credits including English and Mathematics, 13,416 were male and 14,311 were female.

WAEC advised candidates to check their results online and access digital copies of their certificates. Hard copies can also be requested through the council’s certificate portal.

To check their results, candidates should follow the procedure below: Log on to https://www.waecdirect.org/, Enter Examination number, Select Examination year as 2025, Select Examination type as PRIVATE CANDIDATES, Enter your PIN and serial number, Then click on submit to view your results.
