The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has announced an indefinite nationwide strike. The strike is set to commence at 12:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026.
This decision comes after the expiration of an April 30 ultimatum issued to the Federal Government. A last-minute meeting held on April 29 between union leaders and government representatives ended without any agreement, leading to the declaration of the strike.
The unions attributed their action to the Federal Government’s failure to finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement. They claim the process has been significantly slower than the one recently concluded with ASUU. Key issues raised include the withdrawal of a salary proposal and the rejection of a 30% offer, which the unions dismissed as inadequate and inconsistent with collective bargaining standards.
The strike has been described as “total and comprehensive.” All members across federal and state universities, as well as inter-university centres, have been directed to withdraw their services immediately. Monitoring teams have been deployed nationwide to ensure full compliance, and the unions have warned that any branch that fails to adhere to the directive will face sanctions.
