The House of Representatives has issued an apology to Nigerians over the widespread failure recorded in Lagos State and the South-East during the recent Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Oforji Oboku, who chairs the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies, delivered the apology on behalf of the legislative chamber during a press briefing held at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Oboku called for a detailed and independent inquiry into the situation. He disclosed that preliminary investigations carried out by the committee pointed to human error and negligence by certain JAMB officials—failures that, he stressed, were preventable.

As part of the committee's proposed response, it is considering the deployment of qualified, independent monitors across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These monitors would be tasked with ensuring fairness and accountability in future UTME exercises.

The committee also reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening legislative oversight, pushing for systemic reforms, and restoring public trust in the integrity of national examination bodies.
