The National Examinations Council (NECO) has published the outcomes of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), noting a marked drop in examination malpractice cases.

NECO reported that 1,378,048 candidates initially registered for the exam, while 1,371,992 actually sat for it. The council’s Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, unveiled the figures on Thursday at a press briefing.

Wushishi indicated that 804,948 candidates – equivalent to 58.67 % – secured five credits or more, including English Language and Mathematics. He further noted that 1,126,118 candidates, representing 84.70 %, achieved five credits or more regardless of their English or Mathematics results.

Regarding malpractice, the registrar disclosed that 1,496 candidates were implicated in cheating in 2026, down from 3,878 cases in 2025. This translates to a 64.74 % reduction in the number of individuals involved in exam fraud.

In the subsequent Q&A, Wushishi attributed part of the decline to the introduction of computer‑based testing, which he said has been instrumental in curbing dishonest practices in NECO assessments.

The registrar also refuted allegations that NECO runs so‑called “miracle centres.” He clarified that the council does not operate or endorse such centres and that it owns only a single school.

"We register centres and apply strict criteria for registration. We are unaware of any miracle centres because we have only one school and cannot be linked to them," Wushishi explained.

He added that any existing miracle centres are either set up by state governments or are privately managed, emphasizing that NECO does not support the concept.
