A stakeholder in the education sector has described as an infringement on candidates’ rights the new policy of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which reassign candidates to other universities with lower number of candidates than their carry in capacities. Reacting to the development that led to a peaceful protest by aggrieved parents whose children would be deprived of admission into their choice institutions in Lagos, the Deputy Director, Distance Learning Centre (DLC), University of Ibadan (UI), Prof Olusoji Aremu, stated that the development portended a greater danger for the rights of young Nigerians. He said, “The intended policy of JAMB to unilaterally take candidates to universities where they didn’t apply to portend great danger to the rights of the candidates, parents;and their right to education generally.

“JAMB has no that power in the edict that established it. It should be resisted by all. If a varsity is less subscribed, let it improve its standard. When did JAMB become a regulatory body? Why would that be?
University’s admission is deregulated. Therefore, JAMB cannot willfully and forcefully take candidates to the less subscribed varsities.”“

JAMB has failed cannot impose a policy forgetting that each university will grow at its pace under autonomy,” Professor Aremu said.
