The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to 15 academic programmes at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, following a comprehensive evaluation exercise from October 28 to December 3, 2025.
The accreditation comes after an intensive evaluation process during which NUC panels assessed academic standards, staffing quality, infrastructure, laboratory facilities, library resources, and overall institutional readiness across the affected departments.
The programmes that have secured full accreditation include Doctor of Physiotherapy, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Radiography and Radiation Science, Computer Science, Information and Communication Technology, Architecture, Doctor of Pharmacy, Applied Microbiology and Brewing, Biochemistry, Genetics and Biotechnology, and Pure and Industrial Chemistry.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for SUMAS, reinforcing its reputation as a center of excellence in medical and applied sciences education in Nigeria.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James C. Ogbonna, expressed gratitude to the NUC for the thorough accreditation process and commended the dedication and resilience of the university’s management, staff, and students. He noted that the accreditation validates the university’s commitment to quality education, academic excellence, and global best practices.
The Director of Academic Planning, Prof Jerry Ugwuanyi, lauded the teamwork and professionalism demonstrated throughout the exercise, noting that the university community approached the process with determination and confidence.
The accreditation outcome affirms the quality of teaching and research at SUMAS and positions the institution to attract more students, partnerships, and opportunities within and beyond Nigeria. With this development, SUMAS strengthens its footing in Nigeria’s higher education landscape, signaling a promising future for its academic programmes and graduates.
