The University of Nigeria has addressed a trending social media post claiming a visually impaired student, Nnamdi Daniel, was ejected from his hostel for speaking out about accommodation conditions. The university categorically states that this allegation is false and misleading.
In recent weeks, the Directorate of Accommodation has increased efforts to address overcrowding by removing illegal occupants from hostels, aiming to improve living conditions for students with officially allocated bed spaces. Defaulting students were given 72 hours to vacate, following a two-month period of free stay. This action was unrelated to any press engagement as alleged.
The student in question had not paid for his allocated hostel accommodation. However, due to the university's tradition of empathy and inclusiveness, he was allowed to remain pending payment. Nnamdi Daniel is still in the hostel, despite not having paid for his space. The university is concerned by the inaccurate narrative suggesting his forceful ejection.
Notably, the current administration has implemented a policy on inclusiveness and anti-discrimination, protecting students and staff with special needs. The University of Nigeria is committed to providing a safe and conducive living environment for all students, including those with special needs.
To address decades of neglect in some hostels, the management has taken steps to renovate and construct new facilities. The procurement process for renovating several hostels has been completed, and construction of new hostel blocks has begun. The university urges its stakeholders to remain calm and trust its commitment to addressing hostel challenges and infrastructure issues.
