Bayero University: Transformer Failure And Water Scarcity…

Oct, 16Views: 29

The Deanery of Student Affairs at Bayero University, Kano, has released a notice addressing the recent transformer outage, water shortage and the mitigation actions being taken on the New Campus.

In a memorandum dated 14 October 2026, reference number BUK/SA/VC/008, and signed by Deputy Dean of Student Affairs (New Campus), Dr. Sani Saidu Ibrahim, the office conveyed sincere sympathy to all students living on the New Campus who have endured hardship, discomfort and inconvenience over the past few days as a result of the water scarcity caused by the unexpected transformer failure.

The statement reaffirmed that the Deanery fully recognises the seriousness of the situation and is working hand‑in‑hand with university management to cushion the impact and restore normal services as quickly as possible.

Immediate Mitigation Measures Implemented:

According to the notice, a series of emergency interventions have been rolled out to relieve the pressure on the halls of residence.

  • The Vice‑Chancellor authorized the provision of a high‑capacity Mikano generator, which now powers the main boreholes at the Centre for Qur'anic Studies, supplying water directly to several male and female hostels on the New Campus alongside the existing solar‑driven system.
  • Maintenance crews have renovated and re‑connected all surface water tanks serving the Idris Garba, El‑Kanemi and Sa’adu Zungur hostels.
  • Additional piping has been installed to tap water directly from the university’s central pipeline, feeding the Sa’adu Zungur, Asiya and Gambo Sawaba hostels.
  • The Deanery’s dedicated water tanker, after being repaired, is actively hauling water from the Old Campus to refill storage units across the New Campus residences.
  • The Student Affairs Deanery building now operates an open‑door water station from 7:00 am daily, with its standby generator running to allow students to collect water on site.

These actions are intended to provide immediate relief while longer‑term solutions are being finalised.

Progress on Permanent Restoration:

In addition to allocating 300 litres of diesel yesterday to keep the emergency supply points operational, the Vice‑Chancellor confirmed that the faulty transformer has been successfully repaired. He expressed confidence that, Insha Allah, full electrical power and the automated water distribution system will be completely reinstated within the next few days.

The Deanery thanked the student body for their patience, resilience and cooperation during this challenging period, and urged everyone to continue observing orderly conduct at all designated collection points as the restoration process is completed.
