The National Universities' Commission has approved the establishment of a School of Postgraduate Studies at Claretian University of Nigeria, located in Maryland Nekede, Owerri, Imo State.
This announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor, Very Rev Fr. Professor Wenceslaus Madu, during a Senate meeting held on Thursday, the 23rd of April 2026. The development signifies a major milestone in the University’s academic growth, indicating its readiness to expand into advanced research and higher-level professional training.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the approval followed a rigorous assessment process by the NUC. This process evaluated the University’s academic capacity, infrastructure, staffing strength, and readiness to sustain postgraduate programmes. He described the approval as a testament to the Institution’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and quality education.
The newly approved Postgraduate courses include Philosophy, Computer Science, Criminology and Security Studies, Public Health, Economics, and Accounting. Members of the Senate welcomed the development with enthusiasm, noting that it would enhance the Institution’s reputation and attract a broader spectrum of scholars, researchers, and professionals seeking advanced academic qualifications.
The VC further announced that the general public would be informed about the modalities for admission, programme structure, and commencement in due course. With this approval, Claretian University joins the growing list of Nigerian Universities expanding their postgraduate initiatives, further strengthening the country’s higher education landscape.
